The easiest planning decision was definitely our location. My family has had a home in Southampton, New York for over 20 years... The most difficult part was waiting 9 months for the day to finally arrive!

Q1

On your day, what was your first thought when you woke up in the morning?

Alexis: I couldn’t believe the day was finally here! I was so excited and desperately wanted to speak with Alex that morning, but instead went to find my sisters and mom so we could start the day together. Sadly, my immediate next thought was to check the weather since the forecast predicted thunderstorms all day and we were planning our reception outside. Much to our surprise the rains held out and it didn’t rain a drop for the party!

Alex: “I wonder what she’s up to?”. I spent Friday night before the wedding with my brother; Alexis was with her family and I knew that I wouldn’t see her until she came down the aisle. Not being able to share the excitement and apprehension with her as it unfolded that day was strange, though made the ceremony all that much more special.

Q2

When and how did the two of you meet, and what is most memorable about your first meeting?

Alexis: Alex and I met our freshman year at Georgetown when we were neighbors on the same floor of our dorm. Funnily enough, we didn’t actually formally meet until the spring semester when we were hanging out with mutual friends. Not only was he incredibly handsome at 18 (and still is!), but we immediately clicked. I just remember thinking I wanted to spend more time with him even though summer was approaching, and luckily Alex made that happen.

Alex: We first “officially” met at an impromptu lunch with mutual friends during our freshman year of college. As I was walking up to the table with a friend who knew Alexis well, a quick jab and a not-so-subtle request assured that a formal introduction would be made.

Q3

What is the most valuable thing that you have learned from each other?

Alexis: Alex has always been cool, calm, and collected and he was such a stabilizing force throughout the entire planning process for me. He showed me time and time again how his personality is the perfect complement to mine. During our engagement, I was simultaneously planning my move from New York to Miami, where Alex works, and interviewing for new a new job after I relocated. There is no doubt I was overwhelmed at times, but Alex was by my side throughout it all and reminded me how much I admire his patience.

Alex: Alexis was characteristically sensible, decisive and enthusiastic throughout the entire process leading to our wedding. She remained true to prioritizing our most desired aspects of a memorable wedding: great music, delicious food and drink, and most important of all the ability to enjoy it all with close friends and family. As in all things, as we planned our big day Alexis’s attitude, animation and appreciation for the most simple and important things in life were a constant reminder of what first drew me to her.

Q4

What was a highlight of your wedding day?

Alexis: It’s so difficult to highlight only a few moments since the entire day was so spectacular from beginning to end, but there are a few that stick out. Alex and I chose not to do a first look since we wanted my walk down the aisle to be traditional and a surprise. I was so overwhelmed with emotion just as I was about to step out next to my dad; I felt myself trembling and starting to cry! When I finally met Alex at the altar, he shared a few words with me and I was immediately calmed and present. I also can’t stop watching all our incredibly hilarious and meaningful toasts! We only chose our siblings to be part of our wedding party, so they each spoke alongside my dad, and each one was better than the next. Our friends and family are still talking about them!

Alex: Sitting to eat dinner with both of our parents and siblings and listening to each in turn get up to offer a welcome, words of advice, humor and well wishes was one of the more special moments. I had no idea what was to be said, but there were laughs, tears and a profound sense of gratitude for our new expanded family.

Q5

What wedding planning decision was the easiest one to make? What was the most difficult?

Alexis: The easiest decision was definitely our location. My family has had a home in Southampton, New York for over 20 years and it’s a place not only so special to me, but Alex has come to love it equally as much. We knew we wanted a church ceremony and the reception to be on our property. It was everything we wanted it to be and the first choice we made in the planning process. The most difficult was waiting 9 months for the day to finally arrive!

Alex: We always loved the idea of getting married at Alexis’s family home. This place has been such a special and important part of her childhood as it has been the site of so many family memories, some of which we now share from recent years. Going from the idyllic backyard party we envisioned to navigating the practicalities of planning such an event from scratch proved to be quite the challenge, one that her family pulled off in spectacular fashion.

Q6

Which feature of your wedding was the most unique?

Alexis: Since our wedding was at my family’s home, there were so many personalized aspects to the wedding, reception, and after-party that might have been difficult for all our guests to notice but were so special to Alex and me. One example is our choice of wine for dinner. My dad has always been a red wine lover and back in the 90’s had come across a California vineyard where the proprietor had a daughter also named Alexis who he named a wine after for her own wedding. My dad purchased several cases of the Alexis wine at that time and saved them in our cellar for 20 years until our wedding night when he offered all the bottles for our guests to enjoy with us! It was something we always talked about doing since I was a little girl, and such a unique addition to the wedding.

Alex: The band did an outstanding job. We knew they would sound great, but the way they maintained an “I can’t help it I just need to go dance” atmosphere from beginning to end set the tone for the whole party. From soulful oldies to childhood favorites and everything in between they knocked it out of the park. I never knew that some of my friends and family had those kind of moves!

Q7

What song did you dance to for your first dance? Why?

Alexis: We chose Thinking out Loud by Ed Sheerin. Alex and I have always loved the song and melody and we felt it really articulated our feelings for each other leading up to our wedding day.

Alex: Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran. It’s simple, genuine, and we thought it would sound great live. The lyrics articulate a lot of what we were feeling leading up to the wedding.

Q8

What was on your wedding day wish list?

Alexis: Alex and I wanted our reception to be a big dance party, so an amazing band was at the top of our wish list and we certainly succeeding in finding them. Press Play covered all the songs and genres we wanted, and our guests were on the dancefloor with us all night long!

Alex: I wanted Alexis and I to be present from start to finish and to enjoy the company of all the most important people in our lives who had gone to great lengths to surround us all weekend. I did my best to notice and appreciate all of the sights, sounds, thoughts and emotions that I encountered.
